Jemma was born via ventouse and at first her head appeared perfectly normal, but after eight to ten weeks Lee realised that it was an odd shape and queried it with her health visitor who, along with everyone else, hadn’t noticed. She agreed, explained why it had happened and taught Jemma’s parents how to reposition her when she looked to her favoured right side.

Lee’s health visitor also referred Jemma to the physio at the local hospital, and in the meantime Lee tried cranio osteopathy, which only caused Jemma distress. Lee then learned of another family with plagiocephaly at her local clinic, who explained about the treatment available. The physio also knew of the treatment and referred Lee to the specialist.

Jemma began treatment at only six months of age, and after just two weeks in the helmet her misalignment was reduced from 24mm to 17mm, despite some initial teething problems that prevented her from wearing the helmet for the full 23 hours per day duration. Out of interest, the specialist at Lee’s local hospital was unconvinced about the helmets and didn’t feel the need to address Jemma’s head shape, instead diagnosing a heart murmur.
